Ultra pace and cut-off calculator

Work out the moving pace you need to beat an ultramarathon cut-off once checkpoint stops are taken off, with first-half and second-half targets.

Moving pace needed–

First half pace–
Second half pace–
Time stopped–

Enter the race distance, the time limit, how many checkpoints you'll stop at and for how long. You'll see the moving pace you need, plus a split for the first and second half allowing for the slowdown nearly everyone gets.

Checkpoint time adds up fast: twelve 8-minute stops is over an hour and a half. Cutting stops is often easier than running faster.

Find ultramarathons to put it to use

What pace do I need to finish a 100 mile race in 30 hours?
18:00 per mile overall. Take out 90 minutes of checkpoint stops and you need about 17:06 per mile while moving.
How much slower is the second half of an ultra?
Most runners are 15 to 30% slower in the second half. Plan for it rather than hoping it won't happen.
Should I walk in an ultra?
Yes. Almost everyone walks the climbs, and many use run-walk on the flat from the start.
