Racing an ultra in winter

Winter ultras reward preparation. Short days mean more hours by head torch, and wet ground slows everyone down. Mandatory kit lists tend to be longer, with spare warm layers, waterproofs and sometimes a bivvy bag, and they are there for good reason.

Plan for slower splits than a summer race and check your margins with the ultra pace calculator. New to the distance? Start with our first ultramarathon guide.

What kit do I need for a winter ultra?
Follow the organiser's mandatory kit list. Expect waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, hat, gloves, a head torch and spare batteries, plus food and a phone.
Are winter ultras harder?
Often, because of the dark, the cold and the ground underfoot. Many runners find cool temperatures easier than heat, but your pace will usually be slower.
