Running after dark

Evening races are easy to fit around work, and racing at night is a different experience: the course shrinks to a pool of light and your senses sharpen. In winter, expect the organiser to require a head torch, and sometimes high-visibility clothing.

Test your torch on a training run, carry a spare battery if the rules allow it, and eat earlier than you would for a morning race. Check each listing for the start time, and use the running pace calculator to plan your effort.

Do I need a head torch for a night race?
Usually, for anything off-road or unlit, and many organisers make it compulsory. Check the kit list for your race.
What should I eat before an evening race?
Have a normal lunch, then a light carbohydrate snack a couple of hours before the start. Stick to food you have tried in training.
