What makes a marathon fast?

Three things matter most: how much you climb, how many tight turns you take, and how cool race day is. A flat course lets you hold an even pace, and a big field gives you people to run with for the full 26.2 miles. Spring and autumn races tend to have the cooler conditions that suit a PB.

We include a race here when the course is described as flat or fast. Check the organiser's course profile before you commit: some have a short climb or an exposed section. Set your splits with the running pace calculator.

Which UK marathon is the flattest?
It depends on the edition, so compare the organiser's elevation profile. Coastal, promenade and riverside courses usually climb the least.
Does a flat course always mean a faster time?
Usually, but weather and pacing matter too. A flat course that is exposed to wind can run slower than a sheltered, gently rolling one.
