Choosing your first race
A good first race has a generous cut-off, a course that suits you, and plenty of people around you. Triathlons with a pool swim or a novice category take away the biggest worry, and a short lapped event means you are never far from help.
Read each organiser's guidance on cut-offs before you enter. For more help, read our guides to your first triathlon, your first ultramarathon and the best UK marathons for beginners.
What is the easiest race to start with?
A 5K or a parkrun-style event is the classic first step. For triathlon, a sprint with a pool swim is usually the most approachable.
Will I come last?
Probably not, and if you do, you still finished. Most organisers and marshals are glad to see every runner home.
